GIN Oy delivers a Point of Care diagnostics manufacturing solution for a ground breaking skin cancer detection product

Skin cancer is one of the most common cancers in the world, accounting for nearly half of all cancers. It has been estimated that nearly half of all Americans who live to age 65 will develop skin cancer at least once. Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the United States.

Each year there are more new cases of skin cancer than the combined incidence of cancers of the breast, prostate, lung and colon. Over the past three decades, more people have had skin cancer than all other cancers combined. The incidence of both non-melanoma and melanoma skin cancers has been increasing over the past decades. Currently, between 2 and 3 million non-melanoma skin cancers and 132,000 melanoma skin cancers occur globally each year. One in every three cancers diagnosed is a skin cancer and, according to Skin Cancer Foundation Statistics, one in every five Americans will develop skin cancer in their lifetime.

Global Innovation Network Oy has developed a Point of Care manufacturing and assembly solution for Sigolis AB Uppsala, Sweden. Sigolis will manufacture a sensor head for a device to detect skin cancer (Maligna Melanoma). The sensor head is a minimally invasive device that attached to a reader that will analyse skin utilising Electrical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS). The role of the disposable sensor head is to send and receive signals in the skin and transfer them to a Point of Care device for further analysis.

The fully automated manufacturing and assembly line will be delivered during the second half of 2013. The manufacturing line is based on the GIN™ Delilah, a modular robotic manufacturing and assembly platform, developed by GIN.

Sigolis AB develops components in polymer by first producing the parts in original through different methods for sculpting silicon and glass wafers. The company provides B to B development and product manufacturing in e.g. Life Science and Optical applications based on ISO 13485 certified processes.
